I recently had the opportunity to present my work to some students at Ragsdale High, and show them some basic stuff about Blender. I think I could have organized better, but it went fairly well. They are currently learning 3ds Max, so they are familiar with working in 3D. I think they were impressed by Blender's scope. I tried to emphasize the community of end-users that has built up around Blender, and how there is a fairly well established set of tutorials and assets specific for the software.
I hope they saw me as an example of someone who is making a living with these self-taught skills, even in a small city like Greensboro. I hadn't really thought about it from their point of view before. The questions were much more about practicalities than gee-whiz-bang stuff. When I was their age I was much less concerned about boring things like whether I could make a living with a skill. Anyway, it was very enjoyable and educational for me. I hope they got something out of it as well.
